Resident Home Areas

The home offers a mix of private, semi-private and shared rooms to balance resident choice and affordability. 60% of the rooms will be private (with private washrooms), and 40% will be semi-private (2 beds with a shared washroom).

While private rooms offer more privacy, semi-private  rooms provide a lower-cost option and may qualify for financial support.

In the new home, semi-private rooms are designed for to offer enhanced privacy compared to traditional shared rooms. Each resident in a semi-private room has their own dedicated area, thoughtfully separated by a partial ¾ wall across the space and room layout that supports comfort and personal space.

All residents receive the same level of care, regardless of room type, and can choose the option that best meets their needs.

Other

As Providence Manor prepares to relocate to its new home within Providence Village at 1200 Princess Street in late 2027, having received Vatican approval, the Sisters intend to transfer ownership of the existing site to Providence Care so it may continue to serve the community.

Providence Care, together with Friends of Providence Commons, will begin planning the redevelopment of the current site as Providence Commons — a new community-focused housing and health care space envisioned as:

  • Mixed-use housing, including market-rate, affordable and supportive housing with a priority for vulnerable women and women-led families
  • Community spaces that foster belonging, healing, connection, learning and creativity
  • A community asset grounded in the mission and legacy of the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul and guided by not-for-profit stewardship

In Ontario, you cannot apply directly to a long-term care home. All applications are coordinated through Ontario Health at Home, which helps guide you through each step of the process. Visit https://ontariohealthathome.ca/ for more information.

All long-term care home residents are required to contribute towards the cost of accommodation and meals. This is called a co-payment fee. The amount of your co-payment fee is based on whether you are in a basic, semi-private or private room.

Regardless of room type, all long-term care residents receive the same level of care.

The Ministry of Long-Term Care sets maximum co-payment fees each year. These are standard across all long-term care homes in Ontario, whether for profit or not-for-profit. Learn more about rates and paying for long-term care by visiting this website.

As part of the redevelopment, the new home will continue to provide the same high-quality, 24-hour care and support for individuals who can no longer live independently and require assistance with most or all daily activities.

Residents in the new home can expect:

Long-term care homes provide help with most or all daily activities and access to 24-hour nursing and personal care.

You can expect to receive the following in a long-term care home:

  • an individual care plan (reviewed every three months)
  • access to 24-hour nursing and personal care
  • help with activities of daily living
  • meals (including special diets)
  • medical services
  • access to health professionals
  • social and recreational programs
  • individualized religious and spiritual services
  • shared dining room, TV rooms and other living areas
  • furniture in your room
  • housekeeping
  • bed linens and laundry
  • personal hygiene supplies
  • medical or clinical supplies (such as walkers and wheelchairs for occasional use)

While the building and environment are being modernized through redevelopment, the services, care, and supports residents rely on will continue—and be enhanced in a new, more comfortable setting.

About Providence Village

No.
Providence Care and Providence Village are two separate organizations with their own leadership and operations. Providence Care has become a subtenant of Providence Village and opened Providence Care’s Hospice, AB Smith Homestead House on the land on March 19, 2025. Providence Care is also currently redeveloping its long-term care home, Providence Manor, on the same property.

Providence Village is a not-for-profit charitable organization created in 2017 to carry forward the legacy of the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul. Providence Village is a legacy project created by the Sisters on the 30-acre Motherhouse property in central Kingston. Providence Village is creating a community whose partners offer complementary care and services to support the health and wellness of individuals and families.

Both Providence Care and Providence Village were both founded by the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul.

The Sisters arrived in Kingston in 1861 and began caring for those most in need. Over time, their work led to the formation of health-care institutions—what we now know as Providence Care.

More than 100 years later, with no new members joining the congregation, the Sisters began planning for a lasting legacy, which included their 30-acre property and Motherhouse. That’s when Providence Village was created—to continue their mission in new and evolving ways.

Think of it this way:

Providence Care delivers health services (subacute hospital care, long-term care, hospice, and community-based programs).

Providence Village provides the space and support for organizations like Providence Care—and others—to work together under one mission-aligned roof within a “village”.

Providence Care needed a new site for its aging long-term care home, Providence Manor. When the Sisters began discussing transforming their 30-acre Motherhouse property into Providence Village, they offered a portion of the land for redevelopment. Now, a new Providence Manor is being constructed there.
