Providence Manor – Long-Term Care
Providence Care’s long-term care home, Providence Manor supports individuals with complex needs who can no longer live at home safely. The 243-bed home, located in downtown Kingston provides personalized 24/7 care and meaningful daily activities. Providence Manor has six Resident Home Areas, each with a dining room and common area. Basic, semi-private or private accommodation is available within the home. Most rooms are private and share a washroom with the adjoining room. There are also showers and therapeutic whirlpool bathtubs located on each resident home area. There is a dedicated unit for individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

How to Access the Service
For Patients and Care Partners:
To apply for long-term care, contact Ontario Health at Home.
They will:
- Assess your eligibility
- Help you choose a long-term care home
- Manage the application and waitlist process
The province has specific laws and regulations for admission to long-term care homes that are designed to ensure fairness and equity.
Eligibility criteria
- 18 years of age or older;
- have a valid Ontario Health Card;
- have health care needs that cannot be met with any combination of caregiving in the home or community; and
- have health care needs that can be met in a long-term care home.

What to Bring
The following is a sample list of approved belongings you may bring with you:
Your Ontario Health Card.
Adaptive Aids
- Canes, walkers, wheelchairs
- C-Pap, Bi-Pap machines
- Hearing aids/devices
- Dentures, eyeglasses
- Prosthetics
- Clothing
- Comfortable, lightweight, easy-care clothing
- Socks, nightwear and underwear
- Bring up to 10 days’ seasonal clothing and 5 sets of nightwear
- Supportive shoes with good traction and secure fit
- Weather appropriate outdoor clothing such as a coat, sweater, sunhat and sunscreen
Personal hygiene products
- Unscented Soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste
Medication
It is important for your care team to know all medications that you are taking at time of admission. Please bring an up-to-date list of medications that you are currently using, including non-prescription, vitamin, and herbal preparations.

- You may bring a small chest of drawers, one beside table and a chair suitable to the room size
- Pictures and wall hangings
- Electrical equipment
- Cell phones and chargers
- Radios
- Fans
- Televisions (up to 36”)
- Laptop or tablet computer with earphones
- Small radio or clock radio with earphones
- Shaver
- Hairdryer (maximum 1500 watts)
Electrical items must be safety-checked before use. To have an item safety checked, please speak to a member of your care team.
You are encouraged not to bring valuables. Personal belongings should be kept in your room. Providence Care is not responsible for the loss, theft or damage of any personal belongings.
You may bring and use cell phones, laptops and tablets; however, to protect the privacy of others, please do not take photos of people in the hospital without first asking permission. When using a device outside of your room, please use headphones.
Not approved for use in the home
The following is a sample list of belongings that are not approved for use.
- Electric blankets
- Heating pads
- Area rugs
- Bath mats
- Coffeemaker
- Kettle
- Microwave
- Toaster/toaster oven
- Desktop computer
- Mattresses
- Refrigerator
- Decorations that may cause a fire hazard
- Video games/consoles (unless installed on a laptop computer)
- Knives (sharps of any kind)
- Weapons
- Curling irons/flat irons
- Humidifiers
What to Expect
Upon admission, you will be introduced to your care team and provided with information about your personalized care plan and daily schedule.
Discharge
We recognize that the discharge of a resident due to death or transfer to another location is an emotional time for families.
However, in order to balance the needs of those urgently waiting for beds, we require families to remove all personal belongings within 24 hours or a disposal fee will be added to the final statement of account.
FAQs
Can family members visit?
Yes! Family and care partners are welcome and encouraged to take part in your recovery.
There are no set visiting hours; however, care partners are asked to speak with a member of the care team if you have questions about the best times for visiting.
The main entrance is accessed by a coded entry system. The code is identified at the key pad. The doors are locked to ensure safety and security of residents and staff.
Are there laundry facilities available?
Complimentary laundry facilities are located on the unit. Staff can provide instructions on how to use them.
Labelled clothing can be laundered by the home. Please place clothing in the “Residents Personal Clothing” carts located on all Resident Home Areas.
There is no charge for residents who choose to have clothes laundered by staff at the home. It is recommended family launder delicate garments. Bed linens, towels, face cloths and shirt savers are provided by the home. Laundering personal bed linens or personal towels is the responsibility of the resident, family member or friend.
Is the home air conditioned?
Air conditioning is not available throughout the entire home. Resident Home Area dining rooms and lounges are air-conditioned. Resident room window air conditioners are available on a first-come-first-served basis with priority given to residents who require one for health reasons.
What if I have an appointment outside of the home?
For appointments at other hospitals, we encourage care partners to accompany you.
For non-medical or follow-up appointments (e.g. dentist or eye exam), transportation is your responsibility. Care partners should attend appointments with you.
Can I hire a private care companion?
Yes, if you or your care partners wish to hire a private care companion at your own cost, speak to the Admissions Coordinator or nurse in charge.
Can I take a tour of the home?

Our facilities operate 24/7, but building access and available services vary by location and time of day. Some entrances may be locked, and ID badge or intercom access may be required.
