Clinical
Providence Care embraces a recovery model of care, emphasizing the importance of interprofessional collaboration and a person-centred approach to the care of our clients. Providence Care is recognized as a teaching hospital in the Kingston community and offers student placements for many of our clinical professional groups. Providence Care is a fully accredited hospital that strives to provide quality care, in hospital, outpatient, and community settings. You can find a variety of full-time and part-time opportunities, both in inpatient and outpatient services, in the outlined professions below.
Clinical Dietitians
Our Clinical Dietitians work as part of the interprofessional team to support and manage nutrition for health promotion, disease prevention and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. Through collaboration with clients and other healthcare professionals, Clinical Dietitians work to create and implement Nutrition Care Plans, suited to individual client needs. They use unique skills and knowledge to provide individualized nutrition education as well as group based nutrition programs.
Leisure Life Skills Instructors
Leisure Life Skills Instructors (LLSIs) work with clients in all of our Mental Health Programs, utilizing treatment, education and participation to assist them in reaching their individual leisure goals. Interventions are delivered on a 1:1 basis or in small and large group settings. In addition, hospital-wide special events and other celebrations are organized by the team, on a regular basis, to provide additional support to our clients and their families. Therapeutic Recreation professionals use recreation and leisure to assist clients in realizing the benefits of a healthy leisure lifestyle and enhance their overall well-being. As a result, clients may improve their cognitive and physical abilities, increase confidence and self-esteem, strengthen interpersonal skills and relationships and improve coping and adaptation skills both at home and in the community.
Medical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians
The Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) and Laboratory Technicians support our Physicians and other members of the interprofessional healthcare team, in the assessment and treatment of our clients. At Providence Care, MLTs play an important role in client care by providing lab tests on both blood and non-blood specimens. The Laboratory team works to provide quality assurance in laboratory testing and quality care and service to our clients.
Medical Radiation Technologists
Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs) at Providence Care are responsible for routine x-rays and ECG’s ordered by Physicians and the Nurse Practitioner. Quality radiographic images are acquired with the use of the lowest radiation dose possible. Our Radiology department conducts routine x-rays that may provide additional information during the course of recovery, by viewing an area where a client may be experiencing pain, observing the effects of a treatment, and/or monitoring the progression of disease. Our Radiology team is proud to offer services to our clients and staff.
Nursing Professionals
As a member of the interprofessional team, the nurse provides care using a person-centred model. Providing nursing care to a variety of clients, with various health issues, the nurse considers the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each individual in order to optimize the health and well being of that person. In collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, including the client and their family, nurses share in the decision-making process; respecting the knowledge and skills of the other healthcare professionals. Together the team strives to provide excellence in care. Our nursing care is grounded in evidence-based practice.
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body, overseeing the standards of practice, licensure, continuing competency and public safety of nursing practice. There are two classifications of nurses within the province of Ontario, the Registered Nurse (RN) and the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). Providence Care hires both RNs and RPNs, both of which must be registered with the CNO.
Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants
As part of interprofessional teams, Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs), use a person-centred approach to assess and treat adults in their physical and mental health recovery. OTs and OTAs use a variety of skills and approaches, both individually and in group settings, to cater to the needs of the client. They focus on self-care, productivity and leisure, while examining the client’s level of function, independence and overall quality of life. OTs at Providence Care play a large role in clinical education, especially with graduate OT students from Queen’s University. OTs value evidence-based practice and interprofessional collaboration, including clients and their families, which is reflected in their daily practice.
Personal Support Workers (PSW)
As a member of the interprofessional team, the Ward Aide (PSW) provides assistance to our clients with both non-nursing personal care and activities of daily living (ADL’s). The Ward Aide also works in conjunction with the regulated healthcare professional team members, to provide a safe and well-maintained environment for clients, staff and visitors of Providence Care.
Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians
Providence Care is proud to support internationally trained Pharmacists. We provide studentship and internship placements to fulfill the Ontario College of Pharmacist credentialing process for those Pharmacist professionals who have acquired their education and experience outside of Canada.
The Pharmacy team at Providence Care is comprised of Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Assistants. The Pharmacist provides consultative and professional pharmaceutical services, and assists in coordinating the activities of the Pharmacy department. The entire Pharmacy team participates in, and is responsible for, the safe distribution of medications. The Pharmacist also provides clinical pharmacy services such as comprehensive drug information, used in the care of our clients, including promotion of appropriate pharmacotherapy. Working with the Pharmacy team and other members of the interprofessional healthcare team, the Pharmacist provides pharmaceutical care to clients across the continuum of care.

Physiotherapists and Physiotherapy Assistants
Physiotherapists (PTs) and Physiotherapy Assistants (PTAs) at Providence Care work as part of interprofessional teams in a wide variety of settings; on inpatient units, in the community, and in outpatient clinics. PTs and PTAs work in partnership with clients to break down the barriers to physical function including helping people recover from surgery, illness, injury, motor vehicle accidents and age related conditions and chronic disease. PTs use a variety of tools and techniques to help patients acquire and maintain an optimum level of function by working to decrease pain, improve joint mobility, increase strength and coordination and improve cardiorespiratory function.
Physiotherapists at Providence Care play a large role in clinical education especially with graduate PT students from Queen’s University. PTs value evidence-based best practice and interprofessional collaboration, including working with the clients and their families, which is reflected in their daily practice.
Psychologists
Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour. Psychology has applications to all programs at Providence Care. These include:
- Mental health problems (e.g. depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia, and problems leading to criminal activity)
- Brain injury and brain diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s)
- difficulties with learning, memory and intellectual ability, and diagnostic assessments to identify client strengths and challenges
- Intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders and pervasive developmental disorders
- Vocational issues, including the return to work following a period of disability
- Difficulty with emotion regulation and engaging in self-destructive and socially inappropriate behaviours
- Behavioural problems arising from dementia, brain injury, and mental illness
- addictions and substance abuse in combination with mental illness
- Stress/adjustment/coping with loss and unexpected life changes associated with adjusting to illness and injury
- The application of psychological science to assist with legal decision-making
Psychologists assess, diagnose, and provide intervention using research-based approaches. There are opportunities to engage in direct client care, consultation, leadership, education and training, research and program evaluation. Psychology professionals also collaborate with numerous outside agencies/organizations for both clinical and research initiatives. The Psychology team has an active student training program and a collegial Community of Practice.
Social Workers
Social Workers at Providence Care provide a wide range of services both in hospital and in the community. Some of these services are:
- Counseling/psychotherapy for individuals, families, couples and groups
- Psychoeducation for individuals, families and groups
- Case management
- Discharge planning (includes help obtaining financial support, housing, community referrals, etc…)
- Supervision, teaching and research
- Consultation
- Community capacity building
- Social action
Social work is a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their well-being. Social Workers aim to help clients and families develop their skills and abilities, to use their own resources and those of the community, to support recovery. Social Workers work with individual client concerns and with broader social issues such as stigma, poverty, unemployment and domestic violence.
Speech-Language Pathologists
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) provide assessment, therapy, education and counseling for adults who have acquired communication (speaking, listening, reading, writing) or swallowing impairments. SLPs at Providence Care treat clients with a variety of conditions, including stroke, brain injury, or progressive diseases. They work with a Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) as part of a number of interprofessional teams in the hospital (in-patients and outpatients) and in the community. Using a person-centered focus, SLPs support clients with their individual goals, to optimize their communication and swallowing in order to enhance their quality of life.
Spiritual Health Practitioners
Spiritual Health Practitioners provide person-centered support for clients and their loved ones as they draw upon spiritual beliefs, rituals, ceremonies and resources for healing, restoration and growth. As members of interprofessional teams across Providence Care, Spiritual Health Practitioners enable holistic care that attends to spiritual, emotional, physical, mental and social needs. Spiritual Health Practitioners use relationship-based approaches to support clients and families struggling to come to terms with, or find meaning in an illness, condition and/or suffering that changes the way clients see themselves and their significant relationships with loved ones and the Transcendent. With clients and family members, Spiritual Health Practitioners enable conversations that articulate significant values that shape health care choices and expressed wishes, especially toward the end of life.
Professional practice competencies and standards, code of ethics and peer review regulations are defined for Spiritual Health Practitioners by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC). Providence Care is an educational center with CASC, providing Masters and post Masters level education toward professional practice certification by CASC.
