No matter how big or small the task may be, volunteers at Providence Care always know how to step up and give it their all. Volunteering is often so much more than a friendly smile and time spent with someone – it’s meaningful, hands-on support in so many different ways.
Across Providence Care’s sites and services, you can find 690 volunteers who last year dedicated more than 31,000 hours of their time.
The youngest volunteer is 14 and the eldest is 94 and each of them bring their unique skills to the table, offering a helping hand every day. And we can’t forget about the 25 lovable dogs who provide pet therapy programming across our sites, one tail wag at a time.
Volunteer duties vary from site to site and include pitching in at welcome desks and outpatient clinics, fundraising, running bingos, coffee groups, gift shops or helping out at the Art Hive art centre.
They make a difference often in the simplest, yet most meaningful moments. Whether it’s offering companionship to someone who is lonely, or sitting quietly with a patient and their family in palliative care – volunteers bring comfort, connection, and compassion when it’s needed most.
Volunteers can be found lending a helping hand virtually everywhere, in more than 70 unique programs. Their level of commitment is truly unmatchable.
Many of our volunteers or their family members have received care in the past at Providence Care and simply want to give back.
Providence Care Volunteer Assistant Megan Richmond, sees the direct impact volunteers make everyday.

Volunteers offer smiles, listening ears and often hold the hands of someone in need. A simple conversation with our volunteers has been known to turn an entire rough day around. By building meaningful relationships with patients, clients and residents, volunteers help provide a sense of normalcy, companionship and fun during what is often a challenging time in an individual’s life.
“Volunteers truly go above and beyond the call of duty. Without their support, we would not be able to offer many of the events and fun activities that enrich the lives of patients, residents and clients,” says Megan.
Every year, Providence Care rolls out the red carpet for its volunteers with its annual National Volunteer Week appreciation luncheon. It’s an opportunity to celebrate their incredible contributions, recognize long-serving volunteers and most importantly, to say THANK YOU!
