Providence Care supports the training of nursing and allied health students from across Ontario. Students work within an interprofessional team to provide recovery oriented, client and family centred care. At Providence Care, students are accepted for placement in a variety of settings including: Providence Care Hospital, Providence Transitional Care Centre, Mental Health Services Community Programs, and Providence Manor. The development and education of our clinical students is a key component of the Providence Care Strategic Plan. Our community-based teams, long-term care home and hospital based staff are focused on meeting the needs of the people we serve, regardless of where they are in their recovery journey. Providence Care Hospital consists of 3 floors, 3 inpatient wings and 30 beds on each unit. The Heritage Wing looks towards the heritage lands, the Lakeview Wing overlooks the waterfront and the Parkside Wing is closest to Lake Ontario Park. You can view maps of our site by clicking here.

Mental Health Services
Adult Mental Health
The Adult Mental Health inpatient units support clients who are 16 years of age or older, medically stable and have a primary diagnosis of severe mental illness such as Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Mood Disorders (Bipolar I or II), or a major depressive disorder. Complex after-care, relapse prevention and/or specialized treatment or diagnostic procedures are included within the services offered.
Forensic Mental Health
The Forensic Mental Health inpatient unit at Providence Care serves clients living with mental illness who have been in conflict with the law who are at risk of committing violent acts, and are unable to be accommodated in the general mental health system. Ultimately, the goal is to increase engagement of the clients in their own treatment, maintain or increase optimal functioning, supporting the clients’ successful reintegration into the community.
Senior’s Mental Health
The Seniors Mental health inpatient service meets the needs of older adults with age-related cognitive and functional impairment with responsive behaviours. We also provide service to clients who are suffering from severe age-related mental illness, or who may require admission under the Mental Health Act.
Complex Medical Management and Rehabilitative Services
Complex Medical Management
The Complex Medical Management inpatient program is offered to patients who have multiple chronic diseases and may require extensive wound therapy or who have complex respiratory needs.
The goal of care is to optimize and maintain functional abilities, increase activity tolerance and slow the rate or avoid further loss of function.
The inpatient Palliative Care unit provides compassionate and comprehensive care to patients with life-limiting illnesses and a life expectancy of less than three months. Care is focused on comfort and symptom relief rather than curative treatment. A team approach to care is provided in order to care for the whole person including skilled medical, nursing, spiritual care, physiotherapy and occupational therapy for comfort, where appropriate.
The inpatient Rehabilitation program provides a range of inpatient rehabilitation services to patients over the age of 16, who are recovering from physical injury, illness or disease, and those who require round-the-clock nursing care. Patients have experienced a life-altering disability such as stroke, spinal cord injury (SCI), acquired brain injury (ABI), musculoskeletal, respiratory, amputee or neuromuscular issues and require a period of intensive rehabilitation.

Providence Transitional Care Centre
The 64-bed Providence Transitional Care Centre will provide increased capacity to meet the needs of frail, older adults and those living with dementia having responsive behaviours in the South East region. The in-patient program will address gaps in restorative and specialized services. Services will promote and preserve wellness and functionality and will enable seniors to age in their community by improving access to timely assessment, care navigation and care delivery.
We offer support services, adult mental health and seniors mental health behavioral support services in 20+ locations across Southeastern Ontario. By offering services across the region, individuals can access support, care and treatment in their own homes or communities.

Collaborative Practice Model
Collaborative practice is defined by the World Health Organization as: “the provision of comprehensive health and human services by multiple health workers and others who work together with patients/clients, their families, and extended caregivers to deliver quality care and services within and across settings”. The Collaborative Practice Philosophy was developed to enhance inter professional collaboration at Providence Care. Adopting this philosophy is an important endeavor as it has been demonstrated to be associated with more positive health care outcomes for clients/patients, better staff satisfaction, and reduced health care costs, as well as increased client/patient satisfaction.
Students are represented as a key contributor in our Collaborative Practice Model. As an academic health sciences centre, we are committed to offering high quality and engaging student placement experiences for everyone who works and learns at Providence Care, and the people we serve.
Our Welcome Letter for students provides an overview of Providence Care Hospital and our community programs. There is information regarding your upcoming orientation, parking, and most importantly, our Vision, Mission and Values. This is the foundation of who we are and what we believe as an organization.
To assist with the organization of your placement, we request that you complete and submit the Student Placement Authorization Form. The first part of the form provides us with pertinent placement and contact information. This information is to be kept confidential and is only used in case of a workplace injury, outbreak, or emergency. The second part of the form is Providence Care’s Confidentiality and Information Security Agreement. As part of your placement, you may have access to confidential information. It is required by law that, as a clinical student, you abide by the regulations outlined in the Personal Health Information Protection Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Clinical Placement Evaluation
Our clinical placements are crucial to assist the transition of students into the role of independent clinicians. The supervisory relationship is one of the most important factors in students’ clinical learning and the clinical placement provides a space for knowledge translation and application. In order for our organization to engage in quality-improvement, we ask that after you have completed your clinical placement at Providence Care, you complete the evaluation tool noted below. This survey is completely confidential. This tool will assist Providence Care to assess the caliber of our clinical placements from the perspective of key stakeholders and provide insight into the maintenance and improvement of the clinical placement experience.
