December 13th 2014 marks the 153rd anniversary of the arrival of four Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul. They were invited to Kingston to provide care among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable citizens of society. Their compassionate work over the years established a robust organization which has become Providence Care. Each year in December we celebrate on Founders’ Day how we are Living this Legacy, in the many programs and teams within Providence Care.
Since becoming the CEO this year I am humbled and honored to be part of Providence Care and our Legacy of creatively enhancing quality of life for some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our communities. Because of the work of our Community teams many people experience the dignity of living in their own homes. When necessary, people receive rehabilitative care for physical and mental health needs in Providence Care’s hospitals. Our staff, physicians and volunteers find innovative ways to help them return to their homes, or sometimes to help them find peace at the end of life . At Providence Manor, the birthplace of Providence Care, we provide a Home in which Residents feel secure, nurtured and respected. In countless ways, each one of us lives out the Legacy of compassion that sets Providence Care apart, and which is valued and respected by people across southeastern Ontario .
The Sisters of Providence faced seemingly insurmountable challenges, and always found ways through the challenges to stay true to their Mission to enhance quality of life. Now it is our turn, 153 years later, to creatively and courageously face the opportunities and challenges set before us so that those people we have the privilege to support and serve will have a better life because of our efforts.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Senior Leadership Team I extend my thanks to all Providence Care’s staff, physicians, and volunteers for living our Legacy and treating each person with respect, compassion and dignity. Together, ours are the Hands of Providence that make the world a better place for countless people and their loved ones.
