While Dr. Ruth Wilson is on sabbatical, Dr. John Leverette has stepped into the role as Interim Vice President of Medical Programs. His new position is significant for many reasons, one of the most remarkable being his family ties to our Mental Health site. “I feel particularly at home in many ways because I visited on the grounds after World War II. I visited my great uncle Dr. E.A. Jimmy James who was the assistant medical superintendent at the time.” When John was in public school he would come help his uncle do rounds during summer vacation. If you think that’s incredible – John sits in the same hallway his uncle’s office was located.
The nostalgia of his childhood in this building is not the only reason Leverette is eager to be here. “I really admire the energy and the drive that the leadership and leadership teams are showing. The whole aspect of operational readiness and getting us ready to move into the new hospital – that’s really exciting,” he says. Adding, “What I’m enthusiastic about is highlighting and supporting our role as a teaching organization. We have a vital role in our relationship with the Queen’s faculty of Health Science and the education of healthcare professionals, specifically related to our particular Mission with aging, rehabilitation and mental health. So we have major components of the educational programs, in fact, all of the programs.”
John brings a combined 41 years of experience with both Hotel Dieu and Kingston General Hospital. His work has appeared in more than 40 peer-reviewed publications which include book chapters, journal articles, abstracts and conference proceedings
