Medical Education
Providence Care supports the training of Medical Students, Residents and Clinical Fellows enrolled in the School of Medicine at Queen’s University, Faculty of Health Sciences. We also provide experiences for learners from across Canada and around the world.
Supporting trainees to learn important clinical skills and engaging in collaborative practice with other members of the interprofessional health care team is very important to us. We are committed to providing an approach to care that is recovery oriented and person-centred. We support learning in a variety of settings including psychiatry, physical medicine & rehabilitation, geriatric medicine, palliative medicine and family medicine.
Providence Care supports undergraduate and postgraduate programs by offering training opportunities in a wide range of core and specialty programs of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the College of Family Physicians of Canada through Queen’s University as well as Clinical Fellowships in highly specialized areas in the following:
Psychiatry
Postgraduate Program Director: Dr. Eric Prost and Johanne Roberge (co-directors)
The Department of Psychiatry at Queen’s University offers a five-year psychiatry residency program fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Undergraduate Program Director: Dr. Debra Hamer
The core clerkship in psychiatry is a comprehensive 6-week rotation with a mix of seminars and clinical teaching. Interprofessional learning opportunities are available and are part of the students’ clinical experience which also allows the student direct patient encounters supervised by faculty and senior psychiatry residents.
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Queen’s University offers a five-year residency program fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Undergraduate Program Director: Dr. Jessica Trier
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation maintains an active involvement in the undergraduate education programs of the Schools of Medicine and Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen’s University. Clinical electives are and observerships are available, on request.
Geriatric Medicine

In addition to block rotations for residents and electives for medical students, core Geriatric Medicine content is a mandatory component of the undergraduate curriculum and taught within a variety of didactic, small group and critical enquiry event. The Division of Geriatric Medicine also actively supports the Care of the Elderly program.
Palliative Medicine

In addition to block rotations for residents and electives for medical students, the Division of Palliative Medicine supports the Palliative Medicine Residency Program at Queen’s University which is a one-year postgraduate training program accredited by both the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Family Medicine
Postgraduate Program Director: Dr. Karen Schultz
The Family Medicine Residency Program at Queen’s University is a two-year residency program fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Family Medicine residents will complete their core family medicine training by spending one half-day each week in our Long Term Care facility, Providence Manor.
Care of the Elderly Program Director: Dr. Chris Frank
The Department of Family Medicine at Queen’s University offers both a 6-month and a one-year program in Care of the Elderly, as recognized by the College of Family Physicians of Canada as a Category 1 residency program.
