At Providence Care, volunteers are essential members of our care team, making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we serve. Through their compassion, support and guidance, volunteers help create a warm, respectful and welcoming environment for patients, clients, residents and their families.
From offering a friendly presence, helping with wayfinding, providing appointment reminders, assisting individuals before or after a procedure, or supporting fundraising efforts, our volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the experience of those who rely on us. Their kindness, commitment and generosity help ease stress, reduce anxiety and bring comfort—one interaction at a time.

Volunteer Opportunities
Providence Care Hospital
Opportunities
Pet Therapy (Own Dog Required):
- Your dog must complete an ‘interview’ (no barking, biting or jumping). Volunteers visit patients, offering companionship and positive social interactions.
Friendly Visiting:
- Socialize with patients and clients on and off the unit doing activities with them such as reading, going for a walk, board games, painting nails, etc.
Gift Shop:
- Volunteers run the Gift Shop at Providence Care Hospital and are responsible for providing customer service, completing purchase transactions and re-stocking shelves.
Meal time assistance:
- Volunteers support patients during mealtimes with opening packages, cutting food, etc. Training is provided.
Nevada ticket sales (must be 19 years of age and older):
- Selling Nevada tickets, in support of the Patient Comfort Fund at Providence Care.
Art Hive:
- Volunteers support patients during activities such as painting, drawing, jewelry making, crafts, etc.
Treat Trolley:
- Volunteers visit patients who can purchase snacks and beverages.
Baking Group
- Volunteers assist with group baking by helping with preparation, clean‑up, and participant engagement.
Welcome Desk
- Volunteers greet patients and visitors as they arrive, offering a friendly welcome, directions, and general information.
Coffee Group
- Volunteers support a social coffee group by assisting with set‑up, serving beverages, and engaging participants in conversation
Tea & Talk
- Volunteers help facilitate a social group by serving refreshments and engaging patients in conversation
Harmony Centre
- Volunteers support programming for clients from the Adult Mental Health Program.
Palliative Care
- Volunteers provide companionship and emotional support to patients receiving palliative care.
Physiotherapy
- Volunteers support the Physiotherapy team.
New Admission Patient Orientation
- Volunteers welcome new patients by offering basic orientation, answering questions, and helping patients feel comfortable and supported.
Spiritual Health
- Volunteers support multi-denominational worship services.
Recreation Therapy
- Volunteers support planned recreation activities, including portering.
Clinic Waiting Room
- Volunteers greet patients as they enter clinics.

Hildegarde Centre (Adult Day Program)Â
- Volunteers support the adult day program by assisting with group activities, meals, and set‑up, helping participants feel included and supported.
Art Hive
- Volunteers support patients during activities such as painting, drawing, jewelry making, crafts, etc.
New Patient Admission Orientation Program
- Volunteers welcome new patients by offering basic orientation, answering questions, and helping patients feel comfortable and supported.
Coffee Group
- Volunteers support a social coffee group by assisting with set‑up, serving beverages, and engaging participants in conversation
Games in the cafeteriaÂ
- Volunteers organize and play games with patients (all games provided). Assist portering patients to and from the cafeteria.
Communion
- Volunteers support the delivery of Communion by assisting the Spiritual Health team.
Hymn SingÂ
- Volunteers support and facilitate group singing and encourage participation.Â

Hospice & AB Smith Homestead House
Opportunities
Volunteers with Hospice provide care to people with progressive, life-limiting illnesses, their families and care partners, and those affected by grief and loss.Â
Palliative Care Connections
- Volunteers assist at this weekly support group for adults with progressive, life-limiting illnesses.
Welcome Desk
- Volunteers greet patients and care partners, offering a friendly welcome, directions, and general information.
Vigil
- Volunteers provide a calm presence for patients who are nearing end of life, offering quiet companionship, comfort, and reassurance when family are unable to be present.
Patient Visiting
- Volunteers offer companionship and emotional support to through conversation, reading, or quiet presence.
Tele-hospice
- Volunteers connect with patients or care partners by phone or virtual platforms, offering social connection, emotional support, and regular check‑ins from a distance.
GardeningÂ
- Volunteers help care for outdoor gardens, contributing to a peaceful, healing environment.
Music
- Volunteers provide live music to bring comfort and relaxation.Â

- Volunteers assist with fundraising at THE SOCIAL. Providence Care receives a portion of the fundraising which benefits patients, clients and residents.

Student Opportunities
Summer Youth Program
Opportunities
Each summer, Providence Care is recruits student volunteers between the ages of 13 – 18 to volunteer at Providence Care Hospital, Providence Transitional Care Centre or Providence Manor.
What is the Summer Youth Program?
The Summer Youth Program provides an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in a health care environment and further develop personal skills while receiving volunteer hours.Â
Some of the activities that students may participate in include recreation therapy programs, fundraising, assisting nursing staff, special events and friendly visiting with patients, clients and residents.
Applications are currently closed until spring 2027.
Requirements
The requirements to become a Summer Youth Volunteer are:
- Students must be entering Grade 9 or higher and must be between 13 and 18 years of age.
- Commit to volunteering a minimum of 40 hours throughout July and August
- Submit one letter of reference
- Attend an interview with Volunteer Services
- Submit a medical clearance form (includes tuberculosis testing and up-to-date immunization records. Submit these items upon being accepted into the program)
- Attend a mandatory orientation
- Must be reliable, motivated, compassionate, flexible and work well with others

High School Co-op Students
Opportunities
Opportunities may be available for high school students interested in earning credits by doing a placement at Providence Care.
Requirements
Completion of a successful interview and medical clearance form is required.

Youth Volunteer Program
Opportunities
The Youth Volunteer Program gives youth the opportunity to gain valuable health-care experience at Providence Transitional Care Centre and Providence Manor, Providence Care’s long-term care home.
What to expect:
- Assist with recreational and fun programs
- Host games and activities (crafts, bingo, board games)
- Socialize and visit 1:1 with patients and residents
Requirements
- Volunteers must be between 14-18 years of age
- Successful interview
- Complete medical clearance (includes TB test)Â
- Attend a mandatory, 3-hour long, in-persion orientation
