Lynn Jackson says she knew at an early age where her path was leading. In her grade-eight yearbook, she wrote she wanted to be an animal lab technician. Fast forward to now and you might not find Lynn working with animals, but you will definitely find her in a lab.
For 33 years, Lynn has worked as a medical laboratory technician. For more than two decades, she’s been an employee of Providence Care.
It’s a behind the scenes job, but the duties and responsibilities the lab technician team has is an important one that directly impacts the quality of patient care.
“We are an integral part of the care team, assisting physicians and nurses in diagnosing patient’s and client’s health conditions,” says Lynn.
Lynn’s team aids in diagnosis through the samples they collect at the bedside. Her team is responsible for collecting, packaging and sending blood and specimens from Providence Care Hospital, Providence Transitional Care Centre and Community Services to laboratories within Kingston Health Sciences Centre, (KHSC) KFL&A Public Health and Dynacare Laboratories for testing and examination.
“Interacting with the patients and clients and even making them laugh is one of the most rewarding things about my job and always warms my heart. I’m a sucker for a quirky joke, and can throw out some good one-liners,” Lynn continues.
The lab technicians also provide training and education on collection and testing to nurses. They collect statistics, as well as take audits of lab functions and turnaround- all to ensure patient and client care is timely and effective.
“My team is incredible. We support each other and learn from one another. We’re more than co-workers, we’re family.”
Thank you to our medical laboratory team! They support an important step in the patient and client recovery journey.
