Sisters of Providence, Providence Care and Community Partners Announce Next Chapter for Providence Manor Site
KINGSTON, ON — The Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul, Providence Care, and the Friends of Providence Commons are proud to announce planning is underway to redevelop the current Providence Manor property at 275 Sydenham Street. The site will be repurposed as Providence Commons, a new community-focused housing and health care space.
The Sisters of Providence, Founders of Providence Care, have stewarded this site as a place of care, dignity, and community support for more than 160 years. As Providence Manor prepares to relocate to Providence Village at 1200 Princess Street, the Sisters will transfer ownership of the property and building to Providence Care, ensuring it continues to serve those in need.
This decision reflects the Sisters’ confidence not only in the shared values that have guided Providence Care since its founding, but also in Providence Care’s demonstrated leadership, expertise, and history of delivering high-quality, compassionate services to Kingston and the surrounding region.
Providence Care’s experience with complex redevelopment projects, including the recent opening of its hospice residence, AB Smith Homestead House, reinforces its ability to steward this site responsibly and sustainably for the long-term benefit of the community.
While planning and design work is just beginning, Providence Commons is envisioned as:
- Mixed-use housing, including market-rate, affordable and supportive housing with a priority for vulnerable women and women-led families
- Community spaces that foster belonging, healing, connection, learning and creativity
- A community asset grounded in the mission and legacy of the Sisters and guided by not-for-profit stewardship
“Our Founders believed that every person deserves dignity, respect, and a place to belong,” says Sister Sandra Shannon, Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul, Corporation Board Chair. “The decision to transfer this site to Providence Care ensures that this purpose continues.”
The Friends of Providence Commons is a group of local advocates and community leaders who have championed this vision and will continue to help shape the project by bringing community perspective, relationships, and ideas into the planning process.
