Barbara Lovitt
Barbara Lovitt is the newest member of the Providence Care Experience Partner Program, joining the team in January 2023. She says she wears two hats at the tables where she sits: one of a retired nurse and one as a former inpatient.
“I understand what the nurses are up to. They are so busy and their caseloads are so heavy. I understand, at least in part, their situation and also understand what it feels like to be a patient.”
Barbara was admitted to Providence Care Hospital in the fall of 2021 as an inpatient, receiving psychiatric care. Her time in the hospital was positive and as she continues on her wellness journey, she says she has a strong desire to want to give back and help others.
“We have a moral obligation to leave the world in a better place than we found it. Sometimes it’s through little things like donating your time and expertise. I became a nurse because I had a calling to help people and that doesn’t just turn off because you’re not getting a paycheck.”
Although new to the team, Barbara is already representing the patient and family voice on a project on Parkside 1, a rehabilitation unit at Providence Care Hospital. She’s helping with the process of creating a seamless discharge transition for patients.
“I feel strongly motivated to speak for vulnerable adults and seniors. It is now a part of my journey to share and name what has gone on in my life and I want to be thought of as brave and courageous, especially by my four grandchildren.”
When not volunteering her time Barbara says she has a close group of friends and is an active member of her church.
